Facts about children with Mental Health Issue - Primary Care SpecialistThis week Freedom Care, as a specialist care services provider, decided to look at some of the key facts surrounding children with mental health issues:

  • Mental illness in children is very common with about one quarter experiencing symptoms in any given year.  The most common of which are children suffering from anxiety, depression and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).

  • Developmental and psychotic disorders tend to be less common, but can impact a child’s lifestyle for much longer.  While diagnosis is complicated it has improved over the years with a mixture of comprehensive medical, developmental and mental health assessments

  • Mental Health care services can provide a mixture of treatments including medication, educational interventions and disorder specific psychotherapy.

  • With many mental health disorders, focusing can be a real issue.  Children need the support of both family members and teachers in order to be able to build and strengthen skills.

  • There is a constant strive towards researching mental health in children, finding out more about the disorders themselves, the risks and how best to treat them.
