Freedom Care are delighted to announce that we have chosen LOROS to support as our charity of the year 2015. LOROS is a local hospice caring for local people. It is also one of the largest adult hospices in the UK, with 31 beds in its inpatient ward. Each year LOROS cares for over 2,500 people and their families across Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland.

LOROS has a mission to enhance the quality of life of adult patients with cancer, progressive neurological conditions and end-stage organ failure for whom curative treatment is no longer possible. Patients are treated at the hospice and in the community based upon clinical need, regardless of background and the ability to pay.

LOROS specialises in holistic, multidisciplinary care, focused on the whole person and including family and carers. The care given takes into account the patients’ physical, psychological, social and spiritual needs as well as their own choices. Family members are also supported in adjusting to loss and bereavement. LOROS also contributes to the education and training of its own and other health and social care professionals and of volunteers. The charity is also committed to research in order to improve the understanding and practice of palliative care.

So where does Freedom Care fit into the picture? In the words of our Director, Katrina Kinch: “Freedom Care Ltd has chosen LOROS as our charity of the year for 2015 because it touches so many people in so many ways; they provide services that would not be available to people without public support and donations like ours.” To keep LOROS open it costs £7.5 million a year – 90% of which goes directly to patient care. A third of this funding is received from the NHS which means that LOROS has to raise £4.5 million each year.

During the coming year we will be doing various fundraising activities for LOROS. We have made an initial donation of £500, which is equivalent to the cost of a specialist complementary therapy session for ten patients or members of their family. We have also signed up for this year’s Accumulator Challenge, in which LOROS provide you with £50 and you have three months to “grow” that £50 in any way you like as long as it is legal and ethical! Our staff are all being encouraged to donate goods to LOROS shops, and some of our team will also be joining the LOROS 10k Twilight Walk  through Leicester on 25th April.

Magdalena Korytkowska, Fundraising Co-ordinator at LOROS said: “The team from Freedom Care visited us last Monday and it was a great pleasure to show them around the Hospice. Their determination to raise funds and make a difference to our patients and their families is awe-inspiring and I can’t wait to see their future fundraising and volunteering actions. I do hope that being associated with LOROS will bring them much satisfaction and help them to reach their business goals and indeed, their own personal goals.”

Last year we were overwhelmed with the success of our fundraising campaign for Ashton King, which enabled us to purchase a custom-made wheelchair for this special little boy. We are equally excited to be involved with LOROS this year and passionate to do as much as we can to support this incredible work. Watch this space for details of further fundraising activities throughout 2015!
