At Freedom Care we provide specialist care services for a whole range of different mental health care and behavioural needs. Over the years we have gained a reputation for helping individuals that have been previously hard to place or who are in need of a low arousal, family setting, which is both therapeutic and responsive to the individual’s needs. One group for whom this approach can be of particular benefit is adults with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).

We were therefore interested to come across the results of a recent study led by scientists at the Weizmann Institute and Carnegie Mellon University. The research discovered unique synchronisation patterns in brains of individuals with autism, a finding that may ultimately lead to early diagnosis and treatment of the disorder.

The key finding of the research was that brains of those with ASD display synchronisation patterns that differ from the pattern observed in typically developing individuals. This difference in brain profiles could enable researchers to begin to understand the differences that arise in ASD. It may also indicate that there are, in fact, many varying altered brain profiles which fall under the umbrella of autism.

One theory the researchers came up with is that the differences between the synchronisation patterns in those with autism could be explained by the way these individuals communicate with their environment. Whilst the average, typical person’s brain networks are influence by intensive interaction with people and the environment, this level of interaction is not present in those with autism.

We will watch with interest how this strand of research develops. Anything that can help diagnose ASD earlier would be a tremendous help both in providing quality health care to the individual concerned, and also support to their family.
