A recent blog featured the inspiring story of Alex Lewis, a father and pub owner who became a double amputee after suffering a streptococcal infection and yet remained positive throughout. To complement this story, today we want to focus on an incredible young man called Nick Vujicic.

Nick is of Serbian descent and was born in Australia with tetra-amelia syndrome, a rare disorder resulting in the absence of all four limbs. At the age of 17 he started his own non-profit organisation, Life Without Limbs. Nick is now a Christian evangelist and motivational speaker who travels the globe to speak about the realities of life with a disability, and also the concepts of hope and of finding meaning in life.

How does Nick find it within himself to do this? He speaks honestly of despair and struggles earlier in his life but also how, despite these, he became convinced of his own self-worth and of the value of each and every individual no matter what their complex health needs. He speaks passionately about his belief that God can use any willing heart to do his work and that God is big enough to overcome any disability.

At Freedom Care we applaud the work that Nick is doing as it resonates so much with our motto “ad posse ad esse” – from possibility to actuality. We firmly believe in person-centered care for each individual with complex health needs and have seen many instances of people overcoming all odds to achieve great things despite their limitations. To quote Nick Vujicic – “Take small steps in the right direction. No matter how small your steps, keep moving forward towards your goal”.

We hope that this article has inspired you and perhaps given you some encouragement that no matter how adverse the circumstances, there is always a glimmer of hope.
