There are many different types of personality disorders, two of which we have touched on in previous articles.  This week Freedom Care, who are specialists in mental health care,  would like to bring your attention to Antisocial personality disorder (ASPD), also known as psychopathy or sociopathy in today’s society.  Signs of ASPD usually start to materialize during childhood and early teens and develop through to adulthood.

There are many characteristics of this disorder, an individual can act impulsively or recklessly, behave dangerously with possible aggressive tendencies.  Often individuals suffering from this syndrome, carry out actions with no thought to the consequences to themselves or others, even if it could result in others getting hurt.

As with most personality disorders and individual must be over the age of 18 to be able to be diagnosed with the condition.  ASPD, tends to decrease in intensity as people get older, with most adults in their 40’s and 50’s experiencing fewer of the more serious symptoms.

Typically, general practitioners are not well trained or well equipped enough to make these types of diagnosis.  It is usually reserved for mental health professionals to make an actual diagnosis, who can then subscribe a long term therapy plan with the possibility of medication to help alleviate some of the symptoms.

As a primary care specialist for suffers of personality disorders we are only a phone call away.  Or alternatively if you would like to talk to us about this or any other topic, please feel free to contact us here.
