A recent Freedom Care blog highlighted the condition Asperger Syndrome. Aspergersis a mild form of autism which affects a person’s ability to communicate and relate to those around them. The blog looked at Asperger syndrome in more detail, and particularly at how it affects the lives of adults and their families.

Purely coincidentally, The Daily Mail recently featured an interview with Susan Boyle. Susan became famous after appearing on Britain’s Got Talent in 2009. Her amazing talent for singing has been hampered on various occasions by an array of personal difficulties and last year Susan revealed that she had been diagnosed with Asperger syndrome.

In The Daily Mail interview, the Scottish star explained that she finds talking about the condition difficult:

“It’s a very difficult subject to talk about because you always feel that eyes are on you, and people view you as different”’ she explained. “I like to see myself as someone with a problem, but one I can solve. It is definitely getting better. Since the diagnosis I’ve learned strategies for coping with it and the best one is always to just walk away.”

In the interview, Susan expressed her hope that she can create a positive awareness of the syndrome. “‘I don’t see my Aspergers as a disability – I see it as an opportunity for people to understand and stop prejudging”, she said. “‘I hope that the awareness created will help other people to see that just because you have a diagnosis, it doesn’t need to limit your opportunities in life. You can go out and achieve whatever you darn well want!”

At Freedom Care we applaud this positive attitude. It echoes our hope that everyone who needs specialist mental health care will be actively encouraged to follow their dreams and succeed in following their chosen path.
