Carrying on from Tuesday’s article, on ways in which individuals can support a loved one,  in this article Freedom Care highlight further points that could ease the challenges that suffering from mental health problems brings.

Give Back Control – one of the hardest factors for someone with complex health needs is the feeling of lack of control. Letting the patient make small decisions can really help make them feel like they are in control, for example encouraging them to choose their clothing, even if they do not match.

Set Appropriate limits – while giving your loved one the opportunity to exercise control is encouraged, it’s also necessary to set limits to ensure everyone’s well being and safety while trying not to single the patient out.

Recognise Courage – with many illnesses, such as cancer, we view suffers as courageous, yet the same courtesy is not shared with individuals with mental illness. It takes enormous courage to live with certain mental health issues day in and day out, which is why it’s so important for them to have the support of family or friends.

The Importance of Hope – next to “love”, “hope” is an emotion that can drive individuals forward even in their darkest hour. Encouraging your loved one to continue with treatment as it will help them live a purpose filled and happy life will give them the drive to move forward.
