Here at Freedom Care, we understand that making the decision to move to a residential house can be one of the hardest decisions an individual or loved one can make. Once the decision has been made you may then be faced with the daunting task of choosing the right house for your needs. You may wish to speak to the local Health and Social Care Trust who can offer advice and provide options for you, however it is important to remember that the choice remains with you.

Upon visiting specialist care homes, it is a good idea to have a set of questions or a checklist handy to ensure it meets all of the individual current and future needs.

  • Is the appropriate equipment available (for example handrails, hoists, adjustable baths and armchair)

  • Can you keep your own doctor?

  • Can your food and dietary needs be met?

  • Is physical therapy available and if so, is it an additional charge?

  • What are the financial and medical requirements to qualify for the facility?

  • Do the rooms have a television? Is there an extra charge for that?

  • What are the rules regarding visitation?

  • Is there a place where residents can go outside by themselves SAFELY?

  • Are there security systems in place? Do visitors check in?

  • Will your loved one’s room and his/her belongings be protected from other patients?

  • Is there air conditioning? Is there enough heat? Do they have an emergency generator?

  • Do the other residents appear happy?

In this situation it is important to trust your gut instinct when initially visiting potential specialist care homes.  As primary care specialists, Freedom Care can help you with answering any questions you may have. For more information on how we can help you, please contact us here.
